Gallery 50, Inc. is celebrating one of Mexico’s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo.  In her lifetime, she was known as her husband Diego Rivera’s wife. Today, 110 years after her birth, Rivera is known as Frida Kahlo’s husband. Both were incredible artists in their day. Kahlo’s art was both political and personal. Kahlo suffered polio in childhood and as a college student, she was in an accident which left her in severe pain for the rest of her life and unable to bear children.  Bed ridden for over a year, her parents encouraged her to paint. Custom easels were made so she that she could paint in bed. Kahlo gave up her pre-med program and became a painter. Her paintings are realistic and surrealistic stories of her suffering and also very closely tied to her Mexican heritage. In her own words, "Really I do not know whether my paintings are surrealist or not, but I do know that they are the frankest expression of myself". I encourage you to visit this website: https://www.fridakahlo.org and this onethat is overseen by her niece: http://www.fridakahlocorporation.com/company.html for more information on the inspiration for our show “Hispanic Culture, Feminism and Flowers: A Salute to Frida Kahlo.” Our submitting artists will show works inspired by Kahlo’s life and art.  I had a sneak peak at the entries so far and from my viewpoint, there is some amazing work in this show.  I suspect that you will agree with me!

On opening night, for fun, we will have a Frida Kahlo look-alike contest.  At approximately 7 pm, those in the gallery will vote for their favorite Frida. That person will win a token prize. Please come and join in the celebration of all things Frida!

Opening night for both shows is Friday, August 4, 2017, 6 – 9 PM, at Gallery 50, located at 50 East Commerce Street, Bridgeton, NJ 08302. The exhibition will run August 2 – 25, 2017.
